On Friday September the 7th my new exhibition "Moving Shadows" (link) was opened at MPG Contemporary (link). This is my third exhibition at this gallery in Boston, USA. A selection of my latest work and my favorite themes were on show: the course of human life, reflection, and humor... In some of the new paintings, like "The Square" or "Flip Flops", I have added an impression of urban landscapes: real people strolling through cities like Madrid or Paris, are now wandering through giant empty spaces with just colorful buildings in the background. The title of the exhibition refers to the ever-present and essential companion of the people I portray: their shadows. The shadows that move the characters and that move us, the spectators. The shadows that help us define the anonymous characters immersed in the bright landscapes of color I love to paint. Moving Shadows : From September 7 until September 29, 2007. MPG Contemporary : 450 Harrison Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts 02118, Telephone: 617-357-8881. E-mail: art@mpgallery.net

On April 26th, my new individual exhibition opened in Art Gallery Galería BAT Alberto Cornejo (link) located in my home town Madrid. The exhibition is entitled "CONSECUENCIAS" (link). In order to celebrate the opening we held a party and Spanish pop group DeLCO (link) performed an incredible acustic set.
La exhibition will be open until June 9th. On that day I will be in the Gallery from 12h to 14h to welcome those of you who have not had the apportunity to see the exhibition. It has taken a while before I exhibited in Madrid again but the delays were due to the fact that the gallery moved locations. And the wait was worth it ! The new gallery space is fantastic. I have also been very busy for the last years and keep a full agenda, in 2006 I held three individual exhibitions. The exhbition title CONSECUENCIAS refers to the time sequences and space with which I reflect how my characters move along the canvas. CONSECUENCIAS Galería BAT Alberto Cornejo

This was the second time that I exhibited my work in this Gallery who are specialized in modern POP art and related art streams. This month EXPAT magazine published an article about my work in their november edition (link). Read or downlad it from the Press & Critics section (link) together with the articles that appeared in the The Boston Globe covering my individual exhibition that was held in September.

On Friday October 27, BAT Alberto Cornejo Gallery (link) opened their new wonderful and very spacious location in Madrid. To kick off the new Gallery location, they held a group exhibition of work from contemporary artists in homage to Picasso on his 125 birthday. I participated with one painting that represents my personal homage to the great artist. The exhbition will last until December 9. On the same day, in the city of Granollers near Barcelona, El Quatre Gallery (link) opened a group exhibition where I also participated with four paintings. The exhibition is entitled "Las formas del silencio" (The forms of silence). Four painters and one sculptor expressed their vision about the different forms of silence. Until November 8. Spanish rock band DeLCO have released their first CD album and they have selected my work for their cover art. They used the painting entitled "Paseo Rojo". The result is stunning, the outside, the inside of the package and the CD itself. Get to know the band here www.delco.es (link). |

For the second time I exhibited at MPG Contemporary gallery (link) in Boston, USA. I showed a group of recent paintings under the title "Life-Time" (link). The reception took place on Friday, September 8. Several galleries in the area also had their opening receptions at the same time, and the result was a lively event with lots of people walking from one gallery to the next. From September 8 to September 30. Life-Time: There are several key concepts that influence my work. Basic elements such as movement, space, action and therefore time are all reflected in my paintings and expressed through the human figure. Anonymous characters observed from a distance, mainly from behind, that stand still, move around the canvas, come closer, move away... Adults, children, playing, moving around, observing, running, jumping... Some of the children generate a feeling of slight fear because we, as observers, can only wish that they would not fall to hurt themselves, that they remain happy, that they live a long and healthy life. Unlike adults, children are unaware of time, and that gives them a freedom and tranquility that we adults too often lack. The people that I choose as models for my characters -without them knowing it- are people that have crossed their paths with mine at different locations and differenttimes in my life. In this particular show for example I have portrayed people that my camera caught in more than six countries. Looking at the paintings as a whole, this is one of my liveliest, more colorful and more optimistic shows, and again, time is the main issue that lays behind every canvas : The time that we possess in our life--and what we do with it--is and has always been a constant worry for me and a background theme in my paintings.

My next individual exhibition in Madrid which was planned to be held in December, has been rescheduled to be held during the spring of 2006. The reason is that the art gallery is moving to a new location around that date and it was preferable to delay the exhibition and take advantage of the fantastic new gallery space. Art magazine Art New England published an article about my individual exhibition that was held at MPG Contemporay, Boston. Read it in the Press & Critics section (link) together with the articles that appeared in the The Boston Globe. |

For the first time I exhibited my work individually in the USA. On Friday June 3rd, my individual exhibition entitled "Solar Time" (link) opened in Art Gallery MPG Contemporary (link) in Boston, MA. The exhibition showed twenty paintings that summarized my work from the past five years. The title refered to two of the protagonists of my paintings: sunlight and time. As background themes, I express solitude, and lack of communication in our society, the stress and rush of life, but also peace, meditation and calmness through the characters that appear on my canvasses. The exhibition was held from June 3 to July 2, 2005. MPG Contemporary is member of the Boston Art Dealers Association. Read some of the press coverage in the Press & Critics section (link). Dutch magazine "Glamcult" (link) published an interview with the owner of Rotterdam based V!P’S Art Gallery (link) for their 5th Anniversary. Peter de Raaf tells us what his favourite exhibition had been in those 5 years, and also explains how we got to know each other: << What has so far been your favourite exhibition ? ‘Counterlight’ (Tegenlicht in Dutch), an exhibition with work by Eva Navarro, in 2003. Earlier in the year, on the West Trade Area, I was spoken to by some gentleman who was looking for one of the restaurants. He mentioned that he had a daughter-in-law in Spain, who could paint most charmingly. Well, it often happens in the art gallery world that enthusiastic parents (in law) and other members of the family drop in, who all know someone who paints fantastically well. You stay polite and ask them if they could send you something. Fortunately, that’s exactly what Eva Navarro did, for her work is really great! The ‘Backlight’ exhibition turned out to be one of the most successful ones. At the moment V!P’S is arranging for another exhibition of her paintings in 2006.>>

On March 12, 2005 my individual exhibition (link) entitled "Urban Tales" was opened in Art Gallery Arte Periférica in Lisbon, Portugal (link). The exhibition reflects the rhythm of the urban city through its inhabitants: figures that move in various directions, and paintings showing sequences of their movement as if they were frames. Even if the "birds eye's view" of the paintings is predominant, some paintings go back to a "ground view", which I used in my previous work. The gallery is located in the the modern Centro Cultural de Belém (link), in front of the Jeronimos Monastery in the Belem area of the city.

This new exhibition gathered my most recent work, more than twenty paintings that shared the same idea and focus. The exhibition was held until June 30th.

On Sunday 27 April, 2003 my individual exhibition (link) was inaugurated in the V!P's International Art Gallery (link) in the city of Rotterdam, Holland. This gallery is specialized in modern POP art and related art streams. The gallery is located in an old warehouse that has now been renovated and turned into one of Rotterdam's leading art centers. Most of what I showed was my latest work with new themes. This time, there is more movement in the characters and several paintings represent a bird's view of the subjects. This gives the spectator a much clearer idea about where the characters are going. This exhibition remained open until 15 june. Later on during the summer, Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones also exhibited in this famous gallery.

In April I also participated in an exhibition entitled "Arcanos Contemporáneos" organized by the Clave Gallery in Murcia (link). 72 Spanish figurative painters were asked to interpret one card of the Tarot. The result of this project was shown in this wonderful exhibition that will travel through Spain the rest of the year. Both a beautiful catalog/book and Tarot card deck were published with all paintings. I interpreted the Gold Seven.

During this period, I realized a new series of illustrations (link) for a marketing and advertising campaign created by the Tiempo BBDO (Barcelona) Agency for a product brand called "La Lechera", marketed by Nestlé. These advertisements are currently appearing in national magazines. All the illustrations communicate the idea of energy generated when consuming the product, with a touch of humor. I am really having fun working on this campaign; it is a great experience.
Using elements of the illustrations I realized, the advertising agency Tiempo BBDO (Barcelona, Spain) created a television add for the same product. You can see it here (link) in Quicktime format.
